Bitter loss for Tornado against Belfort 3-14

Bitter loss for Tornado

This Saturday Tornado Luxembourg, ranked second, had to swallow the bigest defeat of the season so far and by the hands of their closest rival Belfort. One did know about the strength of the guests because the crowned themsleves champions of the French Second Division a half year ago and gained promotion to Division 1. The promotion was cancelled by the French Ice Hockey Federation becuase the club did not ice three junior teams.

The encounter strated fast paced and the (unfortunately very few) spectators saw many a fine play and teamwork. But only one Tornado attack was succesfull. Jeff Meyer drilled the puck home. Against four by the first Belfort forward line consisting of Zakovsky, Hanzal and Sevcik. Therefor we started the middel periode trailing 1-4. Luxembourg came up strong, but agaian and again found their master in the French goaltender. Once the puck was lost in Belfort territory the ASM “Czech” line counter attacked in blitz fashion and with one or two long passes the puck was near the Tornado net. Belfort tallied twice (Hanzal and Zakovsky). For the final stanza excellent Michel Welter was replaced in goal by young Gilles Mangen. Tornado did not take long to come back to 2-6 on a goal by Yannick Back. Straight from the face off Sevcik marked the 2-7. Hanzal (who will transfer to First Divisionist Amneville for next season) and Zabovsky scored goal after goal, 2-13. Ben Houdremont and Pierre Hutter managed to score Tornado’s third and fourth respectively for a final score of 4-13.

Tornado and Belfort changed places in the standings, with Tornado (10 points) in third place just in front of Epinal (9 points). It will we unlikely Luxembourg can hang on to third place. For Tornado will encounter number one Strasbourg 2 next Saturday. Strasbourg surely will be a much stronger side for their first team is not scheduled to play in the Magnus League (French top Division) and therefor some first team players cannot be denied to once play against a Luxembourg team.
