DPR KOREA - ASIAN MYSTERY
.
Kockelscheuer, Tuesday, April 1st: Luxembourg – DPR Korea
By Michal Travnicek
North Korea will be toughest opponent for Luxembourg players for sure. Players from Kim-land are the hottest candidates to take the Division and promote to Division Two of the IIHF World Championships. Any point which they would lose would be a great surprise.
The Ice hockey association was formed in 1955 in DPRK and league competition strated the same year. After 18 seasons, in 1974 to be exactly, the North Korean national team took part in the World Championships for first time. DPRK’s ice hockey was in close contacts with other socialist bloc countries in those times and the national junior team was able to defeat Romania and Hungary for example. A very nice hall accomodating about 6.000 spectators remained as memory of that period.

Pyongyang Ice Rink
Competition breaks at the international level are typical for North Korean ice hockey. The second World Championships in which they participated is dated 1982. This period ended in 1993. DPRK left the international scene again until 2002 and therefore had to play qualifications to re-enter at that level. The Koreans received bronze medals in Division Two 2005 but in 2007 withdrawed from the championship, very probably due to political reasons. That years tournament was staged in the South Korean capitol Seoul.

National team North Korea 2006
The North Korean national league started in the season 1955-56 as mentioned above. In the last four seasons the best seven teams play in the second part of league competition. There are teams not only from Pyongyang, but from Kaesong, Kanggye and Nampo too. Pyongchol Pyongyang is the most succesful team. Pyongchol won four titles in the last five championships. Only to end second in the 2004-05 season. League action is clouded in mystery, because no news or game results from DPRK league are known outside the country.
A very interesting event happened two years ago. The DPRK national team came in Seoul to play two games in March 2006. There were two combined teams including players from both Koreas. Unfortunately, this is the last joint activity of both ice hockey federations until today.

Players form North - and South Korea
The national team took part in last Asian Winter Games in January/February 2007. After a defeat by Japan (who later on won the tournament) DPRK won both games against other opponents and defended fifth place on the Asian ladder. Kim Kwang Ho was Korean’s best scorer with 5+1=6 points. Kim Kyong Il (4+2) and Ri Sun Il (1+5) also recorded 6 points.
