On Sunday, in the evening game, Team Luxembourg met the tournament host and the biggest favorite. The day before, Spain had beaten North Korea with 15-1 after a very convincing game. The Spanish roster is full of strong, fast and skillful players. So, Team Luxembourg was clearly the underdog before the game.

But what did Team Luxembourg do, it came to the game with a huge fighting spirit and determination. In the beginning of the game, Spain tried to push hard, but most of their attacks dried up thanks to Luxembourg's well organized and disciplined defense. Spain got a lot of shots but Luxembourg managed to keep the net clean for almost 30 minutes. It was almost possible to sense how everyone in the IGLOO arena were wondering what is going on.

At 28:08, the Spanish winger Oriol Rubio broke to the breakaway from the left side and scored the first goal on Luxembourg. But Lions didn’t give up and they kept playing hard and gained momentum. Thierry Beran got a chance to be face to face with the Spanish goalie, but Ander Alcaine manage to put his stick in front of the puck and it deflected over the goal. It took another 9 minutes before Spain managed to score their second goal by Pablo Puyuelo. After this Luxembourg got momentum again. A few minutes after that, Marcus Eriksson got the puck to his feet from behind of the net, he moved the puck to his backhand and soon numerous Luxembourgish fans were celebrating the 1-2 goal when only one minute was left of the second period. This gave everyone more hope that we really might be able to surprise Spain. Unfortunately, this feeling didn’t last long. Already in the same minute and just 2 seconds before the end of the period, Gaston Gonzales scored the third goal for Spain and maybe this was a bit of a back breaker for Team Luxembourg.

Apart from Claude Mossong’s breakaway, in the third period the Lions couldn’t no longer find the same spirit as they had before and Spain then showed what happens when you are playing against a good team: they scored seven goals in the last period.

Anyway, this was a sign for the team that they really can challenge every team in the tournament if they just trust themselves and keep playing with discipline. Now we need to take the positive things from this game and use them in the last three games. The most important games for us in the tournament are still ahead. 

Today, North Korea beat Mexico 5-2 so the tournament will be very exciting for us until the end.
Unfortunately, we have heard that the quality of the game stream is not good and you people in Luxembourg have problems to watch the game. Anyway, we have noticed your support from social media and we hope that you keep doing it. The team is working hard to give you the best possible result from the tournament.

On Monday there is no game but team will have practice in the evening. Next game is on Tuesday 16:30 and it is against New Zealand who has won both of their games so far (5-1 against Mexico and 5-2 against Israel).

Ce dimanche, l'équipe du Luxembourg rencontrait l'hôte du tournoi et grand favori du match du soir. La veille, l'Espagne avait battu la Corée du Nord 15:1 au cours d’un match très convaincant. Le roster de l'équipe d’Espagne est composé de joueurs forts, rapides et habiles. Ainsi, le Luxembourg était clairement à la traîne avant le match.

Mais l'équipe du Luxembourg a pénétré sur la glace avec un bel état d’esprit et beaucoup de détermination. En début de match, l'Espagne a poussé fort, mais la plupart de ses attaques ont buté sur une défense luxembourgeoise bien organisée et disciplinée. L'Espagne a eu plus de tirs, mais le Luxembourg a réussi à garder sa cage propre sur pratiquement les 30 premières minutes. L’interrogation et le doute étaient palpables dans toute l'IGLOO Arena.

A 28:08, l'ailier espagnol Oriol Rubio s'échappait côté gauche et marquait le premier but espagnol. Mais les Lions n'ont rien lâché et ont continué à jouer dur. Thierry Beran obtenait un face à face avec le gardien de but espagnol, mais Ander Alcaine plaçait son bâton devant la rondelle et déviait  au-dessus du but. Il a alors fallu 9 minutes à l'Espagne pour marquer son deuxième but par Pablo Puyuelo. Ensuite, le Luxembourg s’est remobilisée. Quelques minutes après, Marcus Eriksson remettait le palet derrière le filet, puis marquait en revers. De nombreux supporters luxembourgeois pouvaient exploser et fêter le but du 1-2 alors qu'il ne restait qu'une minute de la deuxième période. Cela a donné à tout le monde l'espoir de pouvoir vraiment surprendre l'Espagne. Malheureusement, ce sentiment n'a pas duré longtemps. Après une belle occasion dans la même minute, puis à seulement 2 secondes avant la fin de la période, Gaston Gonzales marquait le troisième but pour l'Espagne. L’équipe Luxembourgeoise marquait le pas.

Si l'on exclut l'échappée de Claude Mossong, en troisième période, les Lions n'ont pas pu retrouver le même état d’esprit que précédemment et l'Espagne était en démonstration : ils ont tout simplement su marquer sept buts dans la dernière période.

Quel que soit le score final,  l’équipe Luxembourgeoise a montré qu'elle peut vraiment défier toutes les équipes du tournoi si les joueurs gardent confiance et continuent à jouer avec discipline. Maintenant, il est essentiel de capitaliser sur les signaux positifs de ce match pour les trois dernières rencontres du tournoi. Les matches les plus importants pour nous dans le tournoi sont encore à venir. Aujourd'hui, la Corée du Nord a battu le Mexique 5:2, ce qui fait que le tournoi sera très excitant pour nous jusqu'à la fin.

Malheureusement, nous avons entendu dire que la qualité du débit de diffusion n'est pas bonne et qu’il est compliqué de suivre les matchs du Luxembourg. Quoi qu'il en soit, votre soutien est palpable via les médias sociaux et nous espérons que vous continuerez à le faire. Ce lundi, il n’y aura pas de match mais un entrainement le soir. Le prochain match sera mardi à 16h30 et ce sera contre la Nouvelle-Zélande qui a remporté ses deux matchs jusqu'à présent (5-1 contre le Mexique et 5-2 contre Israël).
