World Ranking updates

23 May 2012

The IIHF has published its new world ranking of all teams that participated at World Championship tournaments within the last four years. Luxembourg stays unchanged on the 43rd place, one spot behind Ireland and one in front of Greece. First in the ranking is the recent gold medal winner Russia, followed by last years champion Finland, then Czech Republic, Sweden and then Canada.

It is worth mentioning that the ranking, which lists 47 teams, is not a complete ranking of all nations worldwide. There are many more ice hockey nations and federations out there. For example all the teams that participated in the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia. This means that Luxembourg should not be considered as 43rd out of 47, but rather as 43rd out of approximately 60.

In comparison to last year, Luxembourg gained 15 points and went from 650pts to 665pts. The points are calculated by a system which is based on awarding points for the final positions in the last four IIHF World Championships and in the last Olympic Ice Hockey Tournament.

On a side note: The number of players in Luxembourg has grown from 332 players to 392 players (+18.07%), which is very good news for the sport of Ice Hockey in the Grand Duchy.
