Luxembourg at the 2007 World Championship Division III
2007 World Championship news:
The World Championship Division III will be organised by the
Irish Ice Hockey Association (IIHA). The stage is set for Dundalk
from 15-21 of April 2007. A new ice rink will be opened there
with a 1000 spectator capacity. Luxembourg also ran for the hosting
of the Tournament, but lacked eight points in the voting.
This year will see a new team competing at the Division III WC:
Mongolia. There are 8 open air ice arenas in Mongolia and the
federation has about 800 licensed players.
Therefor there will be 6 teams competing for WC Division III
honours:
Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Amenia, Mongolia and Luxembourg.
I hope we will do better than this year. We do have better training
facilities with two rinks in the City of Luxembourg.

April 21th, 2007 Ireland - Luxembourg 4-3
(0-0;2-3;1-0;0-0;1-0)
The night before goaltender Philippe Lepage was flown in from
Luxembourg and he was the starting netminder. Alltghough being
outshot 13 against 2 Luxembourg carried an 0-0 score into the
first intermission. Then in the second period the team form the
Grand-Duchy came up strong. Ben Houdremont scored a powerplay
goal at 21.15. He received the puck when it richocheted form
the side of the iron into the slot, just on his stick. Just after
a powerplay sniper David Kraus upped the score to 0-2 (27.41),
when he managed to slide the puck unther the goalie into the
corner. Patrick Schon only served 42 seconds of his holding the
stick penalty as the home team tallied from the blue line for
1-2. At 33.38 another powerplay goal by Ben Houdremont, when
he was left all laone in the slot and netted the puck on the
fat left side. After 40 minutes of play Luxembourg led by 2-3.
In the third stanza it was one way traffic to the Philippe Lepage
minded net. Surely Philippe managed to keep his team alive with
some unbelievable saves. After regulation time the score was
tied 3-3. In the five minute overtime neither team scored. So
a penalty shootout (serie of three) was staged to decide which
team would move up to Division II:
1. Ben Houdremont - deke, save by Kevin Kelly
2. Mark Morrison - scores on the backhand
3. Benny Welter - slapshot, blocker save
4. Gareth Martin - stopped by Philippe Lepage
5. Robert Beran - Backhand, forehand, puck sailed wide
Ireland wins 4-3

April 18th, 2007 New Zealand - Luxembourg
8-3 (1-0;5-1;2-2)
Relegated from Division II New Zealand was the team to beat
in Dundalk, Ireland. Luxembourg, with for the first time Joël
Holtzem in the line up, presented itself well in the first period.
They even managed to survive a 1.33 timespan with a two man disadvantage.
Both Jean-Claude Strasser and Ronny Scheier were in the penalty
box. But unfortunately junior goaltender Gilles Mangen was beaten
late in the first stanza. A hooking call kept Robert Beran from
the ice from 18.33 to 20.31 when New Zealand tallied the second.
Shortly followed by the third marker. At 28.57 Ben Houdremont
finished off a nice play with Robert Beran and Ronny Scheier
for 3-1. After a powerplay goal when Ronny Scheier warmed the
penalty bench New Zealand hit the net twice in the 34th minute,
6-1. With Joël Holtzem in the penalty box for tripping Ben
Houdremont scored shorthanded, 6-2 (47.31). New Zealand scored
two more goals. Then the Beaufort forward line showed it's scoring
prowess. In the match finale Claude Mossong and Krishan Schimberg
assisted on Alain Breuskin's marker (57.02) to settle the score
at 8-3.

April 16th, 2007 Mongolia - Luxembourg
1-10 (0-4;0-3;1-3) (Photos of the match by Graham
Goodman)
Mongolia proved to be an easy opponent for the Luxembourg
squad. After only 1.31 Georges Schier scored the go ahead goal,
0-1. On the powerplay Robert Beran netted number two. Only twelve
seconds later David Kraus blasted the puck home for 0-3 (11.59).
Yves Dessouroux made it a 0-4 score on the powerplay.
In the second stanza Robert Beran (25.04 - powerplay), Benny
Welter (39.25 - powerplay) and David Kraus (39.48!!!) upped the
score with their goals to 0-7.
But at 41.17 Mongolia spoiled the match for junior goaltender
Gilles Mangen by scoring 1-7. It was a shot/pass fro the corner
of the rink and went in from the goalies skate. With a two man
advantage Patrick Schon tallied for 1-8 at 48.47. Yves Dessouroux
scored his second of the encounter (54.38) and finally Robert
Beran made it a perfect ten at 56.41. A comfortable 1-10 win
for the team from the Grand-Duchy. Remarkable the scoring prowess
of all three lines. The first line scored four and both the second
- and third line hit the net three times. And off course Gilles
Mangen performed really outstanding giving up only one goal on
fourty shots.

April 15th, 2007 South-Africa - Luxembourg
2-5 (1-1;0-1;1-3)
After only seven seconds Robert Beran got cought tripping.
South-Africa was quick to beat goaltender Michel Welter, 1-0.
Back at full strength Claude Mossong, giving his debut at the
World Championship, opened the score for team Luxembourg for
the equilizer, 1-1 after 2.19. In the final seconds of the opening
period Georges Scheier was sent to the penalty box by referee
Fabio Lottaroli for tripping.
So captain Ronny Scheier and his man were shorthanded at the
start of the second stanza. Straigth from the face off Ben Houdremont
found Benny Welter, who netted the puck at 20.08 for 1-2. Despite
20 shots on his goal - like the first period - Michel Welter
stood tall. Giving almost no rebounds and those he did give were
useless for South-Africa for he smartly redirected the puck safely
to the corner of the rink. So after foury minutes the scoreboard
showed a 1-2 score.
In the final twenty minutes the referee penalised South Africa
twice within six seconds. Unfortunately Ronny Scheier himself
was directed to the sin bin for hooking. With four skaters against
three defenseman François Schons hit the net after being
set up by Georges Scheier and Yves Dessouroux, 1-3 at 45.34.
Accidentaly (?) South-African Josh Reinecke ran goaltender Michel
Welter over at 47.21. No penalty was called. The outstanding
performer had to leave the ice and 17-year old Gilles Mangen
took his place. But within two minutes South-Africa beat the
cold goalie for 2-3. With a minute to play South-Africa lifted
it's netminder for an extra skater. Benny Welter said thank you!
and scored an empty net goal for 2-4 at 59.02. Robert Beran assisted
on this marker at 59.17 François Schons was penalised
for holding the stick. But at 59.37 Robert Beran hit the empty
net for the final score, 2-5. Quite a surprise for South-Africa
fired 50 shots at the Michel Welter guarded net and also Gilles
Mangen managed quite well stopping twelve of thirteen shots at
goal. With only five shots on goal in the final period Luxembourg
scored three times.
MVP Luxembourg: Michel Welter. |
