2007-04-22 Ireland - Luxembourg We lost the match for second place by a 4-3 score yesterday. In front of an enthousiastic crowd of about 1000 spectators a promotion battle was staged. In the first twenty minutes both teams had their chances. Neither team dominated and the period result was 0-0. For the second period we were determined to prevent a disastrous second period like in the New Zealand match. We succeeded and deservedly took the lead. Because of dubious penalties against Luxembourg the referees paved the way for the Irish to get back into the game. After having led 0-2 we only carried a 2-3 adavantage into the second intermission. An extremely exciting final period followed. We tried to play a sound defensive play and look for the counter. This worked really well until three minutes before the end of regulation time. The Irish tied the encounter. Because of new rule there is a five minute ovetime four skaters against four after a tie. Despite dominating this overtime we did not score. A penalty shoot out, in which the Irish scored, decided the game. Despite the loss we can look back on the tournament in a positive way. We have nothing to be ashamed about. Pity we lost the match after a penalty shoot out. Which has not that much to do with playing ice hockey, but rather with being lucky. |

2007-04-18 New Zealand - Luxembourg 8-3 The team is greatly disappointed after yesterdays 8-3 loss. After winning against South Africa and Mongolia we secretly hoped for more. The more because we had our chances against New Zealand. But during the warming up we got our first disappointing message. Our number one goaltender, Michel Welter, was not able to play because of his calf injury. This took second netminder Gilles Mangen by surprise. Originally not being on the roster for Team Luxembourg - he was selected to replace Philippe Lepage - he played hin his third World Championship match. Gilles showed himself a capable backstopper and gave confidence to the squad. In the first period we perfomed really well as in the South Africa encounter. Despite that we were down 1-0 after the first twenty minutes. In the second stanza we tried to catch up with the team from down under. We knew the opponent to be deadly on the powerplay, but we offered them to many oppotunities to practice the man adavantage. We took many a stupid penalty even when we were in control of the puck. In the dressing room our minds were determined, but form the penalty bench a game cannot be won.... We lost the period by a 5-1 score. In the final twenty minutes we wanted to show that our great performance against South Africa wasn't a fluke and our team has lots of character. In brief we wanted to step form the ice with our heads up. We managed to do so. We tied New Zealand 2-2 in the third period. But we had oppotunities for more goals. Saturday the showdown against Ireland will be staged. The pressure is on the Irish as home team watched by a sell out crowd. But we want revenge for last years defeat and close the tournament with a win. Beside that the game will be live on Irish television. Patrick |

After we won yesterday as underdog against heavy favourite South-Africa we knew we would be the team to beat against Mongolia. Yesterday we won on account of hard labour and a cohesive team performance. This time we were very determined to win this encounter, contrary to matches at last year's World Championship, and no one was hiding when aid was neeeded by a teammate. We were all motivated to wipe out last year's not so very good performance, when we did not carry a point form the World Championship in Iceland. Today we knew we would win, but no gallery play was asked for. And so we performed accordingly. We won 10-1. However we did not manage to dominate as we could have. Our two coaches sent four attacking units on the ice and they rested number one netminder Michel Welter. Michel Welter had a great performance yesterday until he injured his calf. Our second netminder Gilles Mangen performed well yesterday and backstopped the team confidently today. Mongolia was highly motivated and wanted desperately to score their first World Championship goal. In their first encounter they were denied a goal by Ireland, 11-0. Wednesday we will face off against New Zealand. Relegated from Division II we surely will be the underdog. Despite that with two wins under our belts we like to perform well against New Zealand. Surely the emphasis will be on hard labour in this match. Fortunately Joel Holtzem will join the team this evening and help us a lot in the two coming encounters. Michel Welter should be able to mind the nets in those games. Greetings form Dundalk and I hope to continue reporting positive results. Patrick Schon |
