With the ice arena reopened and an extra sheet of ice (the second rink) Huskies actively promoted ice hockey for the moustiques age (4 to 9 year olds). This is the first year of hockey for many of the kids. Also consider that there were only 4 boys playing Moustique last season in Luxembourg. The list has grown to over 30 players 1997 and under this season.
Moustique place 5th in Chalons en Champagne
On Sunday, May 6, the Huskies travelled to Chalons en Champagne
for their final tournament of the season. The coaching staff did
not know what to expect from this tournament. The Chalons en Champagne
team was responsible for a 26-0 beating of the Huskies in a (not
so) friendly match earlier in the season, but the Huskies have
shown recent progress finishing 4th out of 8 teams in the recent
Luxembourg tournament.
6 teams participated from Epinal (2 teams), Amnéville,
Reims, Chalons en Champagne, and the Huskies. The boys started
slow with a loss to Amnéville 1-0. This was a disappointment
as the team have gone undefeated to Amnéville in the 3
previous meetings this season. Then came the rematch with Chalons
and resulted in a much improved 7-0 defeat. Eventual tournament
champions Reims then overwhelmed the Huskies by a similar 7-0
score. The first points of the tournament came with a 1-1 tie
with Epinal 2 team. A controversial penalty shot for Epinal in
the final seconds tied the game disappointing the team. Matias
Casacci scored the Huskies goal. The final round robin game finished
with another loss, this time to Epinal 1 by a score of 7-1. Tuukka
Pyöriä scored the Huskies only goal. The Huskies finished
the round robin with a 0-4-1 record setting up the 5th place final
with Amnéville. This time the Huskies came out aggressive
wanting badly to revenge the tournament's opening game. The final
game was played on a full sheet of ice. This was the first time
for the Huskies so there were some adjustments to be made early
in the game. However, once adjusted, an aggressive team effort
with very good defense resulted in a 2-0 victory and 5th place
finish for the Huskies. An exciting and happy ending to the season.
Filip Misic and Damon Robinson scored for the Huskies, while Tuukka
Pyöriä recorded the shutout with solid goaltending.
Tuukka's netminding was solid throughout the tournament as he
played all but the Epinal 1 game in goal. He also finished second
in a back and forth, penalty shot battle for the Top goaltender
in the tournament.
The team finished the season with a respectable 7 wins, 12 losses,
and 1 tie. This is quite good considering this is the first year
of hockey for many of the kids.
