Our Tornados travelled to Mulhouse on Saturday with their sights set on the bottom line. A defeat at the Patinoire de l'Illberg would have left us stuck in the bottom half of Group C's D3 standings, while a win would have kept us glued to the front of the pack. What's more, if we'd lost, our opponents would have come to steal 3rd place from us.
In front of a large and noisy crowd, our Tornados immediately took control of the match, dominating the first few minutes without scoring. Then, within a minute, Colm Cannon (9'43), Conor Leonard (10'11) and Grigorijs Holodkovs (10'41) made it 3-0. At the end of the 1st period, probably a little worn out physically against the young Alsatian players, the Tornado committed more and more fouls and conceded a shorthanded goal (5 vs 3).
In the second period, Mulhouse reignited the suspense at 23'10, also with a numerical superiority, but Anthony Vincens, Chris Maratea and Colm Cannon added to the score and the trend was finally the same as in the 1st period. Our boys had every intention of keeping control of this match by playing some particularly attractive hockey. In the 3rd period, the Tornado weren't really worried about a possible turnaround and continued to control the match against the young Mulhouse players. The final score was 10-4 to the Tornado.
As the match drew to a close, the Mulhouse club paid a fitting tribute to our coach Christer Eriksson, who has written many fine pages in the history of the Alsatian club. A nice surprise and an emotional moment for Christer.
Coincidentally, it will be Mulhouse who visit us at Kockelscheuer on Saturday 2 December for a rematch. We'll need to produce a similar performance, firstly to keep our hopes of reaching 2nd place in the standings in the second half of the season alive, but also to delight our fans with some very good hockey.
See you in Kockelscheuer on 2 December (get your ticket here)!
