This Saturday, October 4, Tornado Luxembourg will embark on the most incredible away trip in the club's history. The destination? Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a small French archipelago off the coast of Canada, nearly 7,000 km away. For this special first-round matchup of the French Cup, the team will fly a staggering 14,000 km round trip, a journey that symbolizes the unique place Tornado holds in European hockey.

A Match Born from an Agreement
For those wondering how a Luxembourg team ends up playing a French Cup game in the North Atlantic, the answer lies in a long-standing agreement between the French and Luxembourg hockey federations. This partnership has allowed Tornado to compete in the French leagues since 2005, and now it has led to this extraordinary opportunity.

According to team manager Loïc Darras, the local team in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon—the Cougars—requested to participate in the French Cup. "The French Hockey Federation offered us the chance to play them," Darras said. Despite the immense distance and commitment required, the choice was an easy one for the club. "We’re proud to go there and represent Luxembourg — as a team competing in the French Championship — in the Coupe de France" he added. The players shared this enthusiasm, welcoming the unique adventure.

The Opponent and the Passion
Tornado will be facing an opponent with a deep passion for the game. The Cougars typically compete in local championships against another team on the island on best out of three match up and participate in tournaments against Canadian teams in Newfoundland.

One of their most experienced players, Valentin Claireaux, a former French national team player who has also a few season experience form Finnish Liiga, described the vibrant local hockey scene: "The rink is full every weekend for the game. We went to play twice in Canada last year for a tournament in Newfoundland. There are two senior teams and one minor hockey club where we all learn and start to play." This confirms that Tornado will face a well-prepared and supported opponent.

All expenses for this unique trip are being covered by the Territorial Community of Saint Pierre and Miquelon and the French Hockey Federation, allowing Tornado to focus on the game and the experience.

The Final Tune-Up for the Season
The players will have little time to recover from the long journey and jet lag. Their return on Monday, October 6, will be quickly followed by a training session on Tuesday to prepare for the start of the regular season. This one-of-a-kind trip serves as the ultimate team-building experience before the French Division 2 season officially kicks off on October 11 in Rouen.
