HONG KONG — The Luxembourg Senior National Team faced a formidable challenge in their opening match of the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division III Group B tournament, suffering a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the host nation, Hong Kong.

Despite a difficult scoreboard, the Lions showed flashes of resilience. The sole goal for Luxembourg came in the second period. Antoine Thomas, an experienced player who recently acquired his citizenship and was making his debut in the Lion jersey, won a crucial face-off that immediately set up veteran team captain Colm Cannon to bury the puck and get his team on the board.
Between the pipes, goaltender Jesse Miquel faced a heavy offensive barrage but battled hard throughout the contest, earning him the well-deserved title of Luxembourg’s Best Player of the Match.

Following the game, Head Coach Esipov was straightforward in his assessment. He immediately took the weight of the defeat on his own shoulders while acknowledging the proven strength of their opponents.
"First of all, the responsibility for the loss lies with the coach," Esipov stated. "We knew that the game against Hong Kong would be difficult. This team, for example, convincingly beat Turkmenistan, which plays in a higher division. Unfortunately, we were not able to offer enough resistance."
While the opening-day setback is a tough pill to swallow, Esipov was quick to highlight the positive takeaways, particularly praising the effort of the younger roster members and the integration of new citizens.
"At the same time, there are positive aspects. The new players who confirmed their citizenship, as well as the young U20 players, performed well," he noted. This rang especially true for additions like Thomas, who brings seasoned experience to the national squad.

Looking Ahead: Shaking Off the Nerves
Reflecting on the underlying factors of the loss, Esipov pointed to pre-game jitters and minor preparation hurdles as areas for immediate correction.
"On my side, I believe that shortcomings in preparation and nervousness also affected the result," he admitted. However, he remains optimistic about the team's ability to bounce back. "I believe that in the next game we will be more composed, better prepared, and show a different level of hockey."

Elsewhere in Division III Group B on opening day, the competition proved fierce. North Korea showed strong offensive capability with an 8-2 win over the Philippines, while Uzbekistan made a massive statement by dismantling Mongolia with a staggering 26-1 victory.

With the opening night nerves now in the rearview mirror, Luxembourg has a quick turnaround and a prime opportunity for redemption. The Lions will face Mongolia today, April 14, in a game where both teams will be hungry to secure their first points of the tournament.
