HONG KONG — The Luxembourg Senior National Team closed out their 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division III Group B campaign with a 5-1 loss to North Korea, officially concluding their tournament run.
Entering the final matchup, the Lions mathematically needed a four-goal victory to secure a bronze medal. However, the North Korean squad proved too strong in the decisive game, controlling the pace and securing the win.
The lone bright spot on the scoreboard for Luxembourg came from team captain Colm Cannon, who netted the team's only goal. With this final marker, Cannon solidified his position as Luxembourg's overall scoring leader for the tournament.
Coach Esipov Takes Accountability, Praises Team Character
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Head Coach Esipov was unsparing in his self-evaluation while making sure to highlight the dedication of his roster.
"First of all, I would like to apologize to the fans. As the head coach, the responsibility is entirely mine," Esipov stated. "Thank you to the players for the tournament, they worked hard and competed in every game. This team has character, and it’s important how they support each other."
While acknowledging the disappointing end to the week, Esipov emphasized the developmental value of the games. "It’s also important that we gained a lot of information about our weaknesses and what we need to improve. Thank you to everyone who supported us."
Final Standings and Tournament Results
Around the rest of Group B, the final day of competition solidified the podium:
Mongolia vs. Philippines: Mongolia secured a dominant 13-4 victory over the Philippines.
Uzbekistan vs. Hong Kong: The undefeated Uzbekistan squad claimed a 9-4 win against the host nation, Hong Kong.
With these final results, Uzbekistan emerged as the clear winner of the tournament, taking home the gold medal and promotion. North Korea secured the silver, while the host nation Hong Kong claimed bronze. Luxembourg finished the championship in 4th place.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Luxembourg Hockey
While the national team returns home without a medal, the tournament offered a clear picture of the current international landscape. Luxembourg hockey is steadily growing and developing, but the same is true for competing nations, and the global standard of play is only getting harder.
To keep pace and climb the ranks, the Luxembourg hockey family will need to continue its hard work and dedication. Looking forward, there is a strong hope that as the local hockey community continues to expand, it will be met with the increased ice time and facilities necessary to support and grow this beautiful sport.
