Building Better Coaches for a Stronger Future of Luxembourg Ice Hockey

Federation Luxembourgeoise de Hockey sur Glace

The Luxembourg Ice Hockey Federation (FLHG), in partnership with the Royal Belgian Ice Hockey Federation (RBIHF), successfully hosted the IIHF Level 1 Coach Certification Course on 11 and 12 July 2026 at Kockelscheuer Ice Rink.

Over two intensive days, over 25 coaches from clubs across Luxembourg came together to strengthen their knowledge, share experiences, and develop new tools to support the growth of their players and the future of ice hockey in Luxembourg.

Led by IIHF instructor Kevin McLaughlin, Head of Hockey Development at the UK Ice Hockey Foundation and President of Sanesports, along with Marc Verlinden, President of the Royal Belgian Ice Hockey Federation, the course combined classroom sessions with practical on ice training. Coaches explored key areas of player development, including skating, puck skills, tactics, teaching techniques, practice planning, communication, hockey sense, safety, and creating positive learning environments.

A key message throughout the weekend was that great coaches do more than teach hockey skills. They are leaders, mentors, and role models who help players develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, and a lifelong passion for the game.

The course reinforced the shared philosophy of the IIHF and FLHG that player development must always come before short term results. By creating supportive and engaging environments, coaches play a vital role in developing not only better hockey players, but better teammates and individuals.

The success of the event was made possible through the continued collaboration between the FLHG and RBIHF. Special recognition goes to Marc Verlinden, President of the Royal Belgian Ice Hockey Federation, whose leadership and commitment to this partnership continue to provide valuable opportunities for the development of Luxembourg ice hockey.

The FLHG also extends its sincere appreciation to Kevin McLaughlin for delivering an outstanding certification course and to Christer Eriksson,  Director of Hockey Operations for FLHG, for his excellent coordination and organisation of the weekend.

As the new season begins, these coaches return to their clubs with fresh ideas, new knowledge, and renewed enthusiasm. Their commitment to continuous learning will help shape the next generation of Luxembourg hockey players.

Together, we are building the future of Luxembourg ice hockey, one coach, one practice, and one player at a time.
